Aurora reports that its autonomous long-haul trucks achieve roughly a 14–15% reduction in fuel consumption versus human-driven rigs, translating to about $0.15 per mile savings at current diesel prices. Efficiency gains come from smoother acceleration/braking, consistent 65 mph cruising and longer operating hours since robots are not subject to driver rest limits. Aurora Innovation announced a deal with Berkshire-owned McLane to begin autonomous deliveries in Texas using Aurora’s self-driving system initially deployed in long-haul trucking. A prior pilot moved 1,400 loads with a 100% on-time delivery rate, and Aurora plans to expand routes across the U.S. Sun Belt and take on more McLane business later this year.
