Berkshire Hathaway trails S&P 500 by about 10 points in 2026 as Abel deploys cash

Berkshire Hathaway’s B shares are up roughly 2% year-to-date versus about an 11% gain for the S&P 500, a gap that historically has often been followed by Berkshire outperforming the index the next year. CEO Greg Abel has begun deploying a large cash reserve, completing acquisitions including OxyChem and Taylor Morrison and restarting buybacks, while operating earnings rose 16% in Q2 and 17% in the first half. The company trades near 23 times trailing operating earnings with cash accounting for about a third of market value.
