Nio plans battery-swap joint venture with Geely amid Chinese consolidation
Nio, despite technical innovations and still loss-making, intends to combine its battery-swap business with Geely; Geely will contribute swap stations and capital and in return receive 30 percent of Nio’s energy company. The move is meant to reduce costs and, experts say, marks the start of a more concrete consolidation phase in the Chinese car market. Beijing is promoting mergers as overcapacity, shrinking domestic demand and rising exports increase pressure on manufacturers. » More on wiwo.de
NIO and Geely form alliance for battery swapping and charging network, posing pressure on Tesla
Geely takes a 30% stake in NIO’s battery-swapping unit NIO Power (valued at about 16 billion RMB) and can raise its stake to 34% within two years; in return NIO will take a 10% stake in Geely’s charging subsidiary Haohan Energy. The partners plan a nationwide battery-swapping station network of up to 10,000 stations by 2030, and Geely aims to build more than 22,000 charging stations with over 100,000 ports by the end of 2027. Both sides want to develop common standards for battery swapping and integrate the technology into consumer and commercial models; the transactions are subject to regulatory approvals. Market observers see the alliance as a potential competitor to Tesla and CATL that could shift competition in China’s charging infrastructure. » More on finanzen.net
NIO shows profitability gains in China as European registrations collapse
NIO reported Q2 2026 shipments of 107,658 vehicles and revenue up 69.1% to ¥32.14 billion, but revenue missed street estimates. Vehicle gross margin rose to 18.5% and adjusted net profit was ¥26.1 million, narrowing the net loss markedly year-over-year. European registrations plunged (Germany and the Netherlands down sharply), while management highlighted higher-margin SUVs ES8 and ES9 as drivers of margin improvement. Analysts reacted with caution, including a J.P. Morgan downgrade, citing the revenue shortfall and ongoing European weakness as key risks to expansion. » More on finance.yahoo.com
