Vivergo begins shutdown and to lay off 160 staff after government rejects rescue

Vivergo, owned by Associated British Foods, has ceased bioethanol production and will start laying off its 160 employees after the UK government declined to provide financial support, citing value-for-money concerns. The closure follows increased competition from US-imported ethanol after a tariff concession in a UK-US trade deal and leaves one other UK plant, Ensus, awaiting possible support to protect CO2 production.
