  • Opel cuts 650 jobs and for the first time develops a model jointly with Leapmotor

Opel is eliminating around 650 engineering positions in Rüsselsheim and is increasingly relying on cooperation within Stellantis for product development, including a joint development with Chinese manufacturer Leapmotor for a new SUV that is to be produced in Europe. Group CEO Florian Huettl defends the partnership as a way to catch up on electronics, software and battery technology and to offer competitive electric vehicles. Opel confirms its focus on electrification; the all-electric new Corsa is due in 2028 and is expected to cost around €25,000. Huettl calls for fair competitive conditions in Europe in light of growing competition and the favorable production conditions of Chinese manufacturers. » More on welt.de

  • Leapmotor reports strong H1 growth, cuts full-year profit forecast

Leapmotor recorded revenue growth of 57.2% to 38.11 billion CNY in the first half of 2026 and increased deliveries by 60.8% to 356,000 units; exports rose 72% to 96,294 vehicles. Net profit for H1 was 210 million CNY (adjusted 270 million CNY) and gross margin improved in Q2 to 12.6%. Management cut the full-year net profit forecast from 5 billion CNY to around 3 billion CNY due to higher raw material costs, while cash amounted to 38.59 billion CNY. Investors weighed the rapid volume and revenue growth against the lower profit outlook and weaker cash flows. » More on de.investing.com

  • Leapmotor receives disproportionately many e-car subsidies and ranks ahead of Volkswagen

Data from the Ministry for the Environment show that Leapmotor is currently in 7th place for approved e-car subsidies, thus ranking ahead of the Volkswagen brand. Of roughly 3,100 Leapmotor vehicles sold in Germany, 613 received support, while Volkswagen — despite more than 40,000 electric sales — had only 593 subsidy applications approved. In total, €53.9 million had been paid out from the €3 billion fund by the end of June. The main explanations are the relatively low prices of Chinese models and the income-linked nature of the subsidy. » More on sueddeutsche.de
