Evonik hit by downgrade and weak chemical market
The European chemicals sector continued its weakness in September, with Lanxess, BASF, Brenntag and Wacker Chemie in particular posting declines. Evonik fell about 2.7% after a downgrade from Morgan Stanley, which cited risks in the animal feed business and falling methionine prices in Asia as reasons, calling consensus estimates into question. Evonik falls after Morgan Stanley downgrade
The European chemicals sector continued its weakness in September, with the sector index losing 1.3 percent. Evonik plunged about 2.7 percent after being downgraded by Morgan Stanley; analyst Lisa De Neve cited risks in the animal feed business, especially the methionine market in Asia and falling prices. Evonik closes sites in Bitterfeld and Hamburg, production shifted to larger plants
Evonik announces the closure of its Bitterfeld plant at the end of April 2027 and a smaller site in Hamburg due to persistently weak market conditions and long-term insufficient capacity utilization. Forty employees in Bitterfeld and 50 in Hamburg will be affected; production areas will be relocated to larger German sites.
